The CEM formally launched in 2010, and the United States hosted its first meeting (CEM1). This multifaceted, multilateral approach enables proven policies, programs, and technologies to realize broader, faster, and lower-cost implementation across both CEM and non-CEM countries. They also target active cooperation and partnerships with the private sector, international institutions, non-governmental organizations, and other stakeholders key to the deployment of innovative clean energy solutions. Member countries propose, work on, and share leadership of those CEM initiatives and campaigns that help them achieve their own national clean energy objectives. The CEM is bottom-up, voluntary, and collaborative. The 24 countries and the European Commission that are members of the CEM lead the world in clean energy investment, energy demand, economic growth, and innovation.ĬEM members are Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Denmark, the European Commission, Finland, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Norway, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

The CEM pairs political engagement among energy ministers and other high-level officials with year-round technical initiatives and campaigns to generate on-the-ground results. It supports a broad range of clean energy policy and technology activities that together improve energy efficiency, expand clean energy supply, support energy systems transformation, and enhance human capacity. The CEM is a partnership of the world's leading economies working together to accelerate the deployment of clean energy technologies. The Office of International Affairs coordinates the Department of Energy’s participation in the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM).
